Jazzmine’s Day 6-1-08

Jazzmine woke me up at her usual time of 5 am so she could go out to go to the bathroom.  Little did she know that I was on to her hunting instincts as she would hunt baby birds and gophers on our property.  When she was finished she barked at the door so I could make her and the other dogs their breakfast.

After breakfast, all of the dogs were ready for their morning walk.  Jazzmine had grown weaker and weaker over the past few weeks, but still would make our walks.  Every morning and every night, we walk all of the dogs down the bridle paths surrounding our neighborhood. After the walk, Jazz took her nap in the comfort of the air conditioned barn.

At around lunchtime, a worker came to pick up some trash from the house remodel. I didn’t know, but he left the front gate open.  Meanwhile I was in the house cleaning up after the drywall mess getting it ready to paint.  Looking out the window I saw an older golden retriever happily making her way down the street.  It was Jazzmine!  I ran out to get her and she gave me the “squinty look” that she makes when she thinks she’s in trouble.  “You’re not in trouble,” I assured her as we walked home.  The other dogs looked irritated when they thought she had gotten another walk!  Jazzmine just wagged her tail!

That night, after dinner, we walked the irrigation port route and turned on the irrigation ports to water the property.  All of the dogs came to help.  They love the walk to the port locations, then they love to stand in the cool water as it rushes out of the ports onto the property.  After the water was set and running, we all went back in the barn.

As we settled in for the night, Jazz came to me for a pat on the head, lay down by my feet and died….I am soo sad.

All weekend my husband and I recollected all the wonderful 16 ½ years Jazzmine gave us. She went strong right up to the end.

Well, I had another sad day on Friday.  Jazzmine's son Jake, died in my arms.  He was 14 1/2 years old and was born with 10 brothers and sisters one week after I gave birth to my daughter (Sunknee).  This definitely marks the end of an era in my life story.  I was 30 when Jake came into this world.

As Jazzmine's puppies got older, my husband wanted to sell all of the puppies.  They were truly beautiful Golden Retrievers.  As people would come to look at the puppies, I always hid Jake because I wanted to be his master!  Needless to say we did keep him and what a loyal dog he was.  He tended to hide in Jazzmine's shadow, but when needed he would let himself be known.  He was also a dog who would smile on command.  It was a rather sideways, goofy smile, but always made everyone laugh.  Other people who were not "dog people" thought it was rather scary.

One thing that was so funny about Jake is that he loved big BIG rocks.  He had his favorite ones that he would carry on walks with us.  Neighbors were often amazed at the size of the rocks he carried on our walks.  Of course, over the years, he lost most of his teeth.  You can imagine how funny his smile was as he turned into an old dog.

It is very interesting how animals seem to know when it is time to go.  Jake knew he was going and and I took him to the vet he seemed to look up at me as if to say, "Don't worry, I will be alright and I will be able to run and play again in rainbow valley."

Once I was at the vet's office and waiting, Jake put his head in my lap and closed his eyes.  As I kissed his soft white face and stroked his ears, he slipped away.  It was so strange, but very peaceful.  As he lay there, he looked so pleasant and calm.

Now as I write this a few days later I am still getting the knot in my throat.  I am sad.  Dogs are great and they really give us so much love.  Now, I am down to 2 great dogs.  They are litter mates Tux and Rodney and are 4 years old.  I hope that they will be with me as long as Jazzmine and Jake were!

Thanks so much for your nice comments!

Im sorry about your loss. She seemed very special and a very good girl. She was a beautiful dog but even more beautiful in doggy heaven!. All her pain is gone and she is better now that she is in heaven with god to take care of her. She will always be in your heart no matter what because she will watch over you and love you as if it was yesterday. My prayers go out to you and hope you will meet her in heaven all over again.
