I am interested in driving and would like to train my new filly (one year old) to drive and perhaps pull a cart of some kind.  I am starting to drive her with long lines and a halter.  I need to get a surgincal because she has already figured out that if she drops her head, she can step over the lines and then we have to stop and start again! (She thinks that's great fun!)

Then, the most exciting thing happened last Sunday!  A lady with a lovely white gelding pulling a fancy coach decorated with flowers came trotting down my street!  She had just delivered the bride and groom for a wedding down the street and was heading back to where she picked them up!  We talked for about an hour about driving and now I am all excited about it!

Do you know of any websites that offer info on "how to.."?

this is actually a good book....

I learned by watching a friend of mine.  She was great showing me how to do things.  I will help as best I can if you want to ask questions.  The absolute first thing I taught my driving horses though, is voice command.  You can start doing this now.  Whenever I get my horses out to do anything with them, they all get voice command.

I will hopefully be getting my big horse driving too!  So he is learning voice as we learn to ride LOL

Thanks for the helpful suggestion on the book!  I am going to get myself a copy and get some good reading in!

What voice commands do you use for your horses?

Also, is there a good catalog or website that you use for getting your tack?

I use whoa, back, walk on, trot, trot up

I use an amish guy named Samuel Esh.  If you would like his info, let me know and I will PM you

I also start working on the voice commands every time I am working with the horse.  I want them to walk, I say walk on...that way by the time I am starting to round pen and ground drive, they already have the basics down

In real life, people are a lot less heroic. But with horses... Well, they are all great.
